Causality crashes randomly again and again...

    in Causality Story Sequencer

    Windows 11

    Causality 3.0.25

Causality crashes now and then seemingly randomly when

    - a beat is edited in the script

    - a beat is dragged from Research into the whiteboard

    - text is inserted via copy and paste into a beat snippet

    - clicking out of a beat after editing it

    - editing a beat in Research with the editor

    - you want to save with CTRL+S or via File

... just to describe a few scenarios.

Unfortunately, working with Causality now feels like playing Minesweeper.

You never know at which action the bomb will burst and Causality will crash next.

The problem is that it's not possible for me to pinpoint the exact cause of the crash.

Here's what I've tried unsuccessfully to fix the problem: I have

    - cleared the cache in the program files

    - uninstalled the program and then reinstalled it

    - tried older versions (3.0.22, 3.0.23...)

    - abandoned working progress and started from scratch with earlier backup files

    - made sure that Causality is in the list of accepted programs by Avast

It is impossible to work reasonably on the file even for a minute.

I am at my wit's end. Please help!

To anyone who is suddenly experiencing the same problems: Beta Version 3.0.26 will fix it.

Thanks to Per and his team. Cheers!

Tried editing my file for a couple of minutes on another Laptop with Windows 10 Home installed on it. Seems to work there, but I used the free version so I could't check whether it crashes while saving. (Update: It starts crashing again after logging in with my account and trying to save. Can it be that my file was damaged somehow?)

I'm sorry for the crashes. Have you submitted crash reports? Almost all "crashes" are in fact deliberate "suicides" because the app discovers something that isn't how it should be. It marks the crash with the exact place and conditions around it, so finding your crashes is the #1 thing to do. We can usually pinpoint what's happening quickly.

We don't really have any mainstream crashes anymore, we only have niche crashes that only appear for one or two people in very specific combinations of circumstances, who are then having a terrible day in the app.

Please email the email address you put on your crashes to support@hollywoodcamerawork.com.

About the crash that happened after restarting the app, you most likely have the setting to automatically open the last project on startup. Are you comfortable removing registry keys on Windows? I can direct you to where this setting is stored.

But I agree, it smells like there's some condition in the document that causes a crash when the document moves towards the UI. If your work isn't top secret, please also email your document so we can open it here. We'll delete it afterwards and won't read it.

Never mind! Apart from the sudden crashes in the last few days, Causality is a fantastic software.

Yes I have sent crash reports, but unfortunately not always. I just sent another one though and made sure the script was sent along.

An email to support@hollywoodcamerawork.com with my corresponding mail address should now be in your mailbox.

Regarding the crashes on startup, I was already able to open the file again and immediately deactivated the setting to automatically open the last project on startup. Besides that I am sadly not really comfortable removing registry keys on Windows.

As I wrote to you in my email, the crashes I described in my first post appear on a regular basis, so I hope my file is not completly contaminated with sleeping errors.

Thanks for your support! I appreciate it :)
